A spherical lamellar grating interferometer for airborne astronomical observations of far infrared objects

    Get PDF
A lamellar grating has been developed to be used for very far infrared observations on the airborne observatory. The design characteristics and performance during laboratory testing and initial observations of Jupiter at wavelengths between 50 and 500 microns are presented

    Teaching TV studio production

    Get PDF
The authors will seek to critique and celebrate popular global television programmes and explore the impact such shows have on student-led studio productions. They will examine the key ingredients that make a successful TV programme, the influence of such shows on students making their own productions, pitfalls to consider and ways to successfully draw upon this relationship in the ever changing world of television. Brown and Duthie will investigate the the relationship between their research and professional practice: they will draw upon their case studies on prominent global television programmes to discuss how television production can be taught at college/university level and raise questions about what students can learn from contemporary programmes and how they can influence and redefine these works in their own student-led television productions

    Syndromes after Partial Gastrectomy

    Get PDF
This Thesis presents a study of the altered physiology which may follow resection of part of the stomach. The incidence and types of clinical syndromes from which the patient may suffer after partial gastrectomy have been defined by a careful follow-up study and investigations of gastrointestinal motility, cardiovascular and electrocardiographic changes in response to a meal of glucose and absorption of glucose and of iron by the intestine have been carried out. The results of these investigations are discussed in relation to the various types of post-gastrectomy syndromes. In Volume I, the main body of the Thesis, a description of the methods used and a statement and discussion of the results are presented. Volume II is an appendix to the main Thesis and includes details of the various studies

Influence of Bridge Facility Attributes on Bicycle Travel Behavior

    Get PDF
An unlabeled multinomial logit model is developed to estimate the impact bridge facility attributes have on bicycle travel behavior. Data were collected in Austin, Texas, via a GPS-based smartphone application. Three attributes are analyzed and interacted with varied demographic and trip purpose information: bridge accessibility, vehicular volume, and traffic separation. Due to the significant investment in bicycle facilities at the local, state, and federal levels and the increase in urban bicycle use, it is imperative that agencies fully understand the behavioral elements underlying bicycle travel patterns. Transportation planners cannot assume bicyclists are solely focused on minimizing travel time or distanceโ€”standard practice assumptions for vehicular modes. This paper focuses on the analysis of bridge characteristics that are attractive to bicyclists. While several others have looked at bicycle facility preferences, this is the first paper to focus exclusively on bridges. Bridge facilities are fundamentally different from the res

Sensitivity of markers of DNA stability and DNA repair activity to folate supplementation in healthy volunteers

    Get PDF
We have previously reported that supplementation with folic acid (1.2โ€‰mgโ€‰dayโˆ’1 for 12 week) elicited a significant improvement in the folate status of 61 healthy volunteers. We have examined effects of this supplement on markers of genomic stability. Little is known about the effect of folate supplementation on DNA stability in a cohort, which is not folate deficient. Preintervention, there was a significant inverse association between uracil misincorporation in lymphocyte DNA and red cell folate (P<0.05). In contrast, there were no associations between folate status and DNA strand breakage, global DNA methylation or DNA base excision repair (measured as the capacity of the lymphocyte extract to repair 8-oxoGua ex vivo). Folate supplementation elicited a significant reduction in uracil misincorporation (P<0.05), while DNA strand breakage and global DNA methylation remained unchanged. Increasing folate status significantly decreased the base excision repair capacity in those volunteers with the lowest preintervention folate status (P<0.05). Uracil misincorporation was more sensitive to changes in folate status than other measures of DNA stability and therefore could be considered a specific and functional marker of folate status, which may also be relevant to cancer risk in healthy people
